MUSIC FROM THE LITTLE KNOWN

A K-State professor opts to start his own record label

By Michael Hooper
The Capital-Journal
Manhattan jazz musician Wayne Goins has created a music label to champion little-known musicians who want to record and promote their own music.

"The Little Apple is for the little guys who can't afford major record labels," Goins said. "We want to be the home they come to when they want to get their music out."

Goins, 43, said he decided to create the label after recently recording his own record, "West Coast Swing." He had several offers to distribute the CD, but didn't find anything he approved of.

"I got to thinking, 'Why don't I start my own company rather than paying someone else,' " he said. "No one will be able to promote me better than me. We've got a catchy name, a catchy logo. It was literally born overnight."

David Brown, left, Wayne Goins, center, and Deborah Goins have joined together to create Little Apple Records in Manhattan.
Goins was born and raised in Chicago and is a jazz guitarist who loves the West Coast cool style. He also plays blues, funk, reggae and rock. He has recorded more than 20 albums for Ichiban Records and has toured extensively throughout Europe. He played in June with a group of musicians at the Coleman Hawkins Neighborhood Festival in Topeka.
Goins is an associate professor and director of jazz at Kansas State University, where he conducts three big bands and teaches combos, jazz improvisation courses, a jazz history class, and guitar and electric bass instruction. He earned his doctorate degree at Florida State University.

Goins has a team that is helping him pull together the music label. Producers are Goins and David Brown; recording facilities is Brown Bear Sound; logo and graphic design is by his wife, Deborah Goins; legal services are provided by Ken Lovern; production assistance is Crystal Clear Audio; and photography is by Jeff Smith.
